Oshawa resident Carson Young was given some great news earlier this summer when he learned that he had been selected to the Ontario U14 rugby team. Making the team was a big accomplishment, but what makes this feat even more impressive is the fact that he is only twelve years old! Carson plays his club rugby for the Oshawa Vikings and worked extremely hard to reach this goal. All of the players that were invited to the tryouts had to endure months of training and practicing before the coaching staff made their final selections. Carson’s hard work and dedication on the rugby pitch paid off as he earned a spot on the team and a chance to represent Ontario at the National Festival in Vancouver B.C. that was held from August 5-11.
Carson and the rest of his Ontario teammates traveled to the National Rugby Festival where they faced the top provincial teams in Canada. The team played great for the entire week and ended up winning the tournament beating a very talented B.C. team in the finals 17-7. This was the first time in the history of the festival that Ontario has beaten B.C. Getting the opportunity to travel to B.C. and play with and against the best 14 year old players in the country was a great experience for Carson and helped him to take his rugby skills to another level. The Festival was held at the University of British Columbia and the entire team got to stay at the campus for the week.
Moving forward Carson is sure to be a force for both the Vikings and Team Ontario for years to come. In addition to all of his accomplishments on the rugby field, Carson is also a competitive wrestler. In May he won the Kids Canadian National Wrestling Championship. The rugby gold medal and wrestling championship are two amazing achievements for such a young athlete. If his early success is any indication there are certain to be more championships in the future.
Congratulations Carson and good luck!
